Modul-Bio deploys MBioLIMS BioBanking® for CryoStem, a national cohort dedicated to GvHD – Graft versus Host Disease.

CryoStem is a project aiming to better understand the mechanisms of Graft versus Host Disease in order to find biomarkers and therapies against GvHD. With over 5,5 million euros of grants collected, CryoStem has built a large network of 20 Biological Resources Centres across France and a collaboration with 30 Centres specialized in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

What is Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD)?

GvHD is common complication of stem cell transplantation where the transplanted immune cells from the graft attack the host's body cells. There are two types of GvHD, the acute form that occurs within the first 100 days after transplantation and the chronic form that occurs after 100 days. GvHD can cause severe consequences potentially leading to the death of the patient.

Challenge of collecting rare samples

A large number of biospecimens will be key to better understand this orphan disease. In order to have the highest quality standards for collecting samples of GvHD patients across a large number of centres participating in CryoStem project, standard operating procedures have been set for all centres and MBioLIMS BioBanking® has been successfully implemented in order to manage all GvHD patients and samples collected in a centralized system. This is why CryoStem constitutes a unique biobank of GvHD patient samples.

MBioLIMS BioBanking®

MBioLIMS BioBanking® is a pure web-based multi-site data management software system specifically designed for Biological Resource Centres and for large-scale biology projects such as national cohorts. For the GvHD study, the MBioLIMS BioBanking® solution allows 20 Biological Resource Centres to be connected to centralized database software. All biological samples of the cohort and their associated data are managed by the application. It also allows the centres to work independently while using harmonized SOPs as well as common reagents and barcode labelling systems. Centres can share pertinent information meanwhile following the highest standards. The samples are collected at specific periods before and after the Graft for the acute and chronic form of GvHD. The persons in charge of the centres are notified by email at defined intervals to prepare the sample collection for the patients. The reporting tool of the software provides precise statistical reports on patients and samples for further analysis and decision making.

Rare patients / samples

Over 1,200 patients diagnosed with GvHD are now part of CryoStem national cohort and over 33,000 rare samples have been collected with the use of MBioLIMS BioBanking®. This biobank represents now a powerful tool to unravel new therapies against GvHD.
